June 3rd 2006 - Betty - my mother in law bought me a special birthday present - A Cock called Spearchucker.- He is a very handsome Maran

The last 2 pics show Spearchucker at work less than 15 minutes after arriving

10 days later and the chooks are more confident and enjoy drinking from the ducklings little pool!

So far we have had 24 eggs only 153 before they have paid for themselves - they are safe for the time being!!!!

We are now the proud keepers of 4 Maran hens who on their first day provided us with 3 lovely fresh eggs only another 14 dozen and they will have paid for themselves and be safe from the pot!!!

The chooks below are described as good for eating but not good layers -as long as they are they will be as described on the tin!! 15 of this lot but they are not as adventurous as the ducklings yet.

3rd March 2006

Due to the arrival of Avian Flu in Europe even the French are bringing their chicken under cover. As Corrie & Ron are in Morocco their friends have moved the chicken into our barn to keep them legal - threats of 750 euros fines - threatened!

We had to put mess up at the windows and also make wooden frames - all planned but a sudden flurry of activity.

Could not be bothered with nesting boxes decided within minutes to do her own thing!

Klinger is now fattening up nicely - unfortunately he has been saved from the freezer - maybe time for a re-trial!!

This is Hotlips and friend on their first afternoon on the loose - we had to keep the dogs in the house!

This is the lovely Hotlips enjoying her freedom - Spearchucker tried to attack me when I pick his girls up and made a racket while they were out - they did not care about his noise for a moment!
